Coronavirus Facts — In Simple Language

And

Can UV Light Kill Coronavirus? YES.

Coronavirus Infection Occurs By Touching An Infected Person (Or Surface) — Or Inhaling Infected Respiratory Droplets.

man sneezing

Respiratory Droplets Are Primarily Produced During; Coughing, Sneezing, Speaking, and Exhaling (breathing out).

Respiratory Droplets come in a wide range of sizes.  They are divided into two groups — based on their size, and how long they can remain in the air: *

  • Large Respiratory Droplets are larger than 5 microns — and produced by coughing and sneezing,  A human hair is 70 microns wide.
  • These droplets fall out of the air within seconds or a few minutes.
  • They fall close to the source (mostly within 6 feet).
  • Most Covid infections occur during close contact (within 6 feet).
  • Small Respiratory Droplets (often called: “aerosolized”) — are up to 5 microns (defined below ***).
  • Small droplets can remain in the air for several minutes to hours.  Some of the smallest droplets can remain airborne indefinitely.
  • Small droplets quickly dry out in the air.  Once dry, droplets become: “particles”.
  • Small droplets / particles can travel far from the source if within air currents.
  • Airborne transmission is not thought to be a major source of Covid infection.

The Covid Virus Lives Within Respiratory Droplets

  • Coronavirus particles are smaller than respiratory droplets.
  • BUT Viruses Can’t Live Without a Host. *4
  • A respiratory-droplet is Covid’s host.
  • This is why the size of respiratory-droplets is stressed –versus Coronavirus’ size.

*4 Source: https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/covid-19-health-general-science/how-long-can-virus-live-outside-body

Infections From Respiratory-Viruses Are Primarily Transmitted These 3 Ways:

  • Direct Contact touching an infected person.
  • Direct Contact touching infected surfaces.
  • Close Contact (with 6 feet) Inhaling Airborne Respiratory Droplets
  • Close contact infection mostly occurs within 6 feet.  Beyond 6 feet the droplets fall out of the air onto surfaces.
  • This Is Why: “Social Distancing” Is So Important.
  • Airborne Transmission (beyond 6 feet)IS NOT considered a major source of Covid infections.

Once Respiratory Droplets Are Expelled From The Body:

  • The droplets move outward from the source.
  • Larger droplets fall (to surfaces & floors) in a short time — and within 6 feet of the source. *4 *5
  • Smaller droplets fall (to surfaces & floors) within several minutes to hours. *4
  • The more air Respiratory Droplets encounter — the more diluted they become. *4
  • This Is Why Lots Of Ventilation Is So Important In Reducing Covid infections. *4

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Is A Virus — Not A Bacteria *5

Antibiotics do not work against viruses.  Some people who are ill with COVID-19 may also develop a bacterial infection.  In this case, antibiotics may be recommended by a health care provider.

Definition of UV Light

  • UV light is created by the sun.
  • UVa, UVb, & UVc light are defined by their wavelengths.
  • UV light covers the wavelength range of 100-400 nanometers (nm). Nanometer is defined below.
  • UVa is 316-400 nm.
  • UVb is 281-315 nm.
  • UVc is 100-280 nm.
  • UVc can’t penetrate the earth’s protective ozone layer.
  • For this reason — viruses have not created an immunity to UVc — because they’ve never been exposed to it.
  • 1 meter = 39.3 inches.
  • 1 Micron = one-millionth of a meter
  • 1 Nanometer = one-billionth of a meter.

Can UV Light Can Kill Coronavirus?

YES!

The U.S. Food And Drug Agency (FDA) Says This On Their Website

  • Q: Can UVC lamps inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus?
  • A: UVC Light is a known disinfectant for; air, water, and nonporous surfaces.
  • UVC Light destroys the outer coating of the Coronavirus (which differs from the newer strains).
  • This leads to inactivation of the Coronavirus.   UVC radiation may also be effective in inactivating newer strains.
  • To inactivate a virus — the virus must be directly exposed to UVC Light (the UV light itself — not the light fixture).
  • Dose and duration: Many of the UVC lamps sold for home use are of lower dose — so they may take longer to be effective against viruses and bacteria.

The Same Findings Are Confirmed By These Additional Resources:

  • A recent study in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC) investigated using UVCc light to kill large amounts of the new coronavirus in liquid cultures.
  • Their study found that UVc light exposure completely inactivated the virus in 9 minutes. *8
  • Another AJIC study looked at using a specific type of UV-C light to kill SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces.
  • The study found that the UVc light killed 99.7% of coronavirus within 30 seconds. *8
  • Based on their results — researchers estimated that far-UVc light could kill 99.9% of airborne coronaviruses in about 25 minutes.
  • They believe that these findings would extend to Coronavirus mutations as well. *6
  • “Far” UVc light” is in the upper range of UVc wavelength at 207–222 nanometers (nm).
  • Far-UVc is good for disinfection.*8
  • UVc light is less detrimental than UVa or UVb (think sunburns).

SUMMARY:  UVc Light Effectively Kills Coronaviruses; In liquids, On Nonporous Surfaces, And In The Air.  *8

  • UVc light must shine directly on the virus to kill it. *8
  • At-home UVc light air cleaners’ UV lamp is typically less bright than the UVc lights used in the studies.
  • This doesn’t mean at-home systems don’t work —  only that they need additional time to be effective.
  • This is why it’s best to run at-home at-home UVc light Air Cleaners 24/7.

Notes:

  • Direct contact with UV light can be harmful to people.
  • UV light exposure can result in skin; irritation, damage, or burns (like sunburns).
  • Never shine UV light directly on your body.
  • At-home UV-light air cleaners utilize UVc light.
  • At-home UV-light air cleaners don’t directly expose you to UV light.
  • Most (likely all) turn their UV light off when you open them to clean their filter.
  • At-home systems can effectively kill airborne viruses.
  • At-home systems also remove odors.
  • At-home systems also remove airborne Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s).  More on this later in this article.
  • At-home UV Light Air Cleaning Systems can’t disinfect surfaces.
  • Lysol Spray’s Label Says: “kills 99.9% of germs & viruses.”
  • Based on Lysols’ claim — Lysol Spray (or wipes) are a good way to disinfect surfaces.

There Are 3 Types Of Pollutants In The Air

Airborne Particles Can Be Reduced or Removed With Air-Filtration.  We say: “can be reduced or removed” because airborne particles must past through the filtration AND different filters have different air filtration effectiveness.

  • HEPA filters remove airborne particles (including dust,  pollen, and mold spores) — down to about 0.3 microns (a human hair is 60 — 120 microns in size.).
  • HEPA filters can’t remove airborne gasses from the air — that must be done with UV light or an Activated-Charcoal Filter.

Airborne Gasses Can Be Reduced or Removed With UVc Light.  We say: “can be reduced or removed” — because the airborne gasses, bacteria & viruses must pass through the air cleaner for it to be effective.

  • Gaseous pollutants are generated by: (but not limited to); burning fossil fuels (like gasoline), paints, varnishes, cleaning products, pressed-wood furniture, and new carpet.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): indoor VOCs are largely emitted by; paint, furniture, household cleaning products, and other similar sources.  That “new smell” is off-gassing VOCs.
  • Some VOC’s are carcinogenic (may cause cancer).

Airborne Bacteria, Viruses, Molds & Mildew Can Be Killed With UVc Light We discussed the details above.

Why Air Purification Is So Beneficial

There are extensive reports on the exposures and health impacts of various indoor air pollutants.  Studies have shown that indoor air pollutants are 2–5 times higher than in outdoor-air.   In extreme situations, indoor-air pollution levels may reach 100 times that of outdoor levels.

How can this happen?  Because HVAC Systems recycle the indoor-air.   Older homes leak outdoor air into the home.  Newer homes have additional HVAC System equipment that ensures sufficient outdoor air is introduced to maintain Indoor Air Quality.  This equipment exchanges a minimum of 1/3 of the indoor air (with outdoor air) each hour. **  Without this equipment — indoor air-quality would become unacceptable to hazardous to our health.

Air leakage or controlled outdoor-air exchange** reduces the contaminants IF the outdoor air is “normally” clean.  A home near a highway or busy street may have outdoor-air that’s more polluted than indoor air.   Reducing chemical contaminants is a challenge because gases come from many sources such as; carpets, paint, varnish, and household cleaners.  The source of another substantial contaminant is (man-made) perfumes added to consumer products.  The end goal is maintaining (recycled) indoor-air quality ,so less outdoor air must be introduced into the home.  This reduces cooling and heating costs.

The Two Most Common Types Of At-Home Air Cleaners

  • Most at-home air cleaners have PhotoCatalytic Oxidation (PCO) technology,
  • PCO is UVc Light shining onto a Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) coated surface.
  • UV light shining onto a TiO2 Coated Surface removes; odors, airborne gasses & VOC’s, mold, bacteria & viruses.
  • We’ve shown 2 PCO air cleaners below.

NOTE: There are concerns about TiO2 Coated Surfaces’ durability — and possibly sending TiO2 particles into the air.  More on this at the end of this article.

  • Another type of at-home Air Cleaners have an Activated-Charcoal Filter (NO UV Light & TiOCoated Surface). We showed one such Air Cleaner above.
  • Activated Charcoal absorbs; odors, airborne gasses & VOC’s well.
  • Activated Charcoal attaches to viruses & bacterial well — but can’t kill them.
  • A UV Light is required to kill viruses and bacteria.

What Is PhotoCatalytic Oxidation (PCO) Air Purification?

  • The advantage of PCO (versus filters) is: Instead of trapping pollutants (like filters do) — PCO destroys the pollutants.
  • A Catalyst helps a reaction occur more easily.
  • One commonly known catalyst is automotive: “catalytic converters”.  They help clean the exhaust from burning gasoline and other carbon-based fuels.
  • A PhotoCatalyst uses light radiation to increase the amount of the reaction.
  • With PCO — Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the photo-catalyst.  TiO2 absorbs UV radiation — creating a pollution-removing reaction.
  • UVc light damages the DNA of microorganisms (such as bacteria & viruses).  With damaged DNA — microorganisms can’t reproduce.  An organism that can’t reproduce can’t infect or cause disease.

NOTE: PCO stops when no UV Light is shining on the TiO2 surface.

There Are Concerns About Inhaling Airborne Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Nanoparticles (NPs) Emitted From PCO Air Cleaners

We would be remiss if we didn’t share current information about the possibility of TiO2 NPs coming loose from a PCO air cleaner AND becoming airborne AND being inhaled.

The Two Ways To Remove Gasses From The Air:

  • Activated-Charcoal filters has been widely used for years to trap gasses and odors.
  • Photo-Catalytic Oxidation (PCO) is effective in removing a wide range of gasses pollutants.
  • Most PCO air purifiers use Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Nanoparticles (NPs) Coatings with UVc Light shining on the coating.

To Date, Research-Studies Have Not Produced Sufficient Evidence Of  Negative Health Effects From PCO Air Cleaners

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

  • To date, there is no standard test method to compare and rate the effectiveness of PCO cleaners.
  • The effectiveness of PCO air cleaners sold for use in homes remains largely undocumented.
  • A review of the literature suggests that more research is needed to further advance PCO as an effective technology.

Al’s Plumbing, Heating & A/C Makes No Observations or Recommendations About PCO Air Cleaners Safety

Proposed Improvements To PCO Air Cleaners — To Reduce Any Potential Risks Of TiO2

Several proposed improvements to TiO2 Coatings have been discussed.  Some may have been implemented by various manufacturers, but little to no information is available as to how manufacturers do the coating process.

1. The Original Formulation For The Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) Coating:

  • 70% Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
  • 30% Ester-Based Resin (glue) — bond TiO2 to the surface.

Source: https://patents.google.com/patent/US8328917B2/en

2. Improve The Resin (glue) Used:

  • Vinyl-Ester resin degrades after UV Light exposure.  Its tensile strength and elasticity decrease with UV exposure.
  • UV-Light Curing Epoxy-Resin improves after UV Light exposure.  Its tensile strength and elasticity increase with UV exposure.

3. Improve The TiO2 Application Process:

  • When TiO2 is applied with the (conventional) Liquid-Coating process — it’s more subject to chipping and flaking.
  • Another method is a Powder-Coating process — which involves electrically charging the TiO2 while spraying it onto the surface.
  • Powder-Coated applied TiO2 is more durable and has a longer lifetime than a Liquid-Coating applied TiO2.

Source https://patents.google.com/patent/US7820100B2/en (NOTE: A different Patent Number)

4.  Increase TiO2 Particles Size.

  • Using “micro-sized” TiOreduces risks to human health — as compared to Nanoparticles (NPs). *
  • NPs are more toxic to human health — as compared to larger particles made of the same chemical.*
  • It’s usually suggested that particle toxicity decreases when particle size increases. *
  • The average size of a TiO2 NanoParticle is 12 — 23 nm. *1
  • The average size of a TiO2 MicroParticle is 125 nm. *2

5.  Replace TiO2 With A Different Material.

  • Other metal-oxide-based materials have been developed — as replacements for TiO2.
  • One proposed change is replacing Pure Titanium Dixoide (TiO2) with Chemically-Modified TiO2
  • A new patented raw-material, CASUL® (instead of TiO2) is described as: “absolutely safe” by its manufacturer.  *3
  • CASUL® is a synthetic mineral.
  • CASUL® is produced by REMONDIS, a company in Germany.

A Furnace-Mount, Whole-House Air Cleaning System — For Airborne Particles (no LV Light or TiO2 coated surface)

A True HEPA Furnace Filter’s MERV Rating Is MERV-17 to MERV-21. Furnace filters are available up to MERV-20 .

Home Air Filters Are MERV-5 To 13.   MERV-17 To 20 Are Typically Used In; Hospitals & Nuclear Power Plants.

THE CATCH: The higher the Merv Rating — The more the filter Reduces Airflow through the HVAC System

AND higher MERV filters Clog Faster (and must be replaced more frequently).

  • Lowered airflow causes the HVAC System to run longer and harder than it’s designed to.
  • This impacts indoor comfort because the HVAC System can’t move the volume of air needed to adequately cool / heat the house.
  • This increases cooling & heating costs And wears the HVAC System out faster.
  • For the best balance between clean air and adequate HVAC System airflow It’s best to install a Furnace-Mount, Whole-House Air Cleaner OR A Portable Air Cleaner in occupied rooms.
