Bathrooms Of The 1960’s — 1980’s
Bathrooms of years gone by focused on function. They offered nothing more than what was needed. Bathtubs and bath vanities were “built-in”. This meant they were surrounded by walls on 2-3 sides. Over the years, bathrooms moved beyond “functional”. Today’s new bathroom products have turned bathrooms into places with luxury appointments & detailing.

Free-Standing Versus Built-In
Among The Trends In Today’s Bathrooms Are Free-Standing Bath Vanities & Bathtubs. Many free-standing bathtubs are designed to fit within the space where a built-in bathtub was located (check tub dimensions before you buy). Or, if you want to rearrange or enlarge your bathroom, relocating the bathtub becomes easier because no walls surrounding the tub are requried.

Today’s Free-Standing Bath Vanities Are Not Surrounded By Walls
Free-standing bath vanities and bathtubs are designed to be free-standing, and are not intended to be built-in. This allows total freedom in locating them anywhere. versus yesteryear’s fixtures that required they be surrounded by walls.
This also allows more flexibility in the size of fixture. Many older baths have a 5 foot bathtub with a “sitting” ledge on the end. With today’s free-standing bathtubs, often a Six Foot bathtub can be installed within the existing space where a 5 foot bathtub currently exists. The area between the new tub and nearby walls is left open.

Updating A Bath With An Enduring (Versus Trendy) Decor
If you want to update a bathroom without concern it will be out of style in a few years, there are some simple ways. When making selections, ask yourself this “Has Some Version Of This Item of Decor Been Around In The Past?” If the answer is no, it’s likely a trend that will go out of style in a few years. If the answer is yes, you can have a better comfort-level that your bathroom won’t look “dated” long before it needs to be renovated again.

Neutral Bath Fixtures Colors
There are many bath fixture colors, But, if they have not been seen in the past, they are likely a color-trend that will become dated in the future. If you are old enough, you may remember gold, green and rose colored bath fixtures to mention a few. Today, the only two recommended colors for bath fixtures (bathtub & toilet) are white and off-white / “bone”.

Neutral Granite Vanity Tops Colors
Granite is a natural material, so there is more latitude in choosing colors. First, decide if you want a; white, beige, or gray, or other color-palate. Then pick granite colors that work with that color-palate.
If you would like to see “neutral” granite colors, go to websites of Big-Box Home Improvement Centers and view what they keep in stock. Those are the most neutral & in-demand colors.

Neutral Wall Tile Colors
Bathroom tile has become as personal as wallpaper. Tile comes in a seemingly endless array of colors. How neutral you may choose to go could be determined by how much tile you will install. Keep in mind, removing and replacing tile down the line will be expensive & difficult.

While that’s not a problem in the bathroom, caution is advised near cooking appliances when used in the kitchen.
Neutral Floor Coverings
As with bath tile, choices for floor-coverings abound. And, as with wall tile, removing glued-down tile in the future will be expensive and difficult. If you are impressed with a current color-trend, the decision to install it or go with something more neutral may be determined by how large the floor-area is. In small bathrooms, it’s much less of an issue to remove and replace tile. The larger the room is, the more expense and effort will be required for a future update.
