Ways To Help Prevent Frozen Outdoor Faucets
Freezing temperatures in north Texas aren’t common — but when they do occur, they can cause frozen outdoor faucets. Exterior Faucets on north-facing walls are the most prone to freezing since cold-air weather systems are ushered into Texas with the winds from the north. Helping to prevent frozen and broken outdoor faucets is an easy and inexpensive way to avoid plumbing repair bills.
Prevent Frozen Outdoor Faucets On Exterior Walls

Protecting exterior wall faucets takes only seconds. The easiest way is to cover them with an insulating cover designed for that purpose. The one shown just below has a slip-tie that pulls tight around the faucet, right up against the wall. This cover is reusable — and allows for easy removal by puling the cover open — expanding the cover back into its original shape (shown below).
- A Short-Term solution is to wrap the faucet with a bathroom hand-towel. Then cover the towel with a disposable, plastic shopping bag you get from stores. Use tape to secure the bag tightly against the wall. You must cover the towel. If it rains — a wet towel may freeze.
- A Long-Term Solution is to purchase a reusable, insulating cover designed for outdoor wall faucets.

- Also, check to see if there is a gap around the outdoor faucet’s pipe where it comes through the wall. These gaps are often covered by a chrome trim ring. If there is a gap, fill it with caulk to stop air from entering the wall. The air-flow is very cold and could cause a frozen pipe inside the wall.

Prevent Frozen Outdoor Faucets Coming Up From The Ground

In DFW, near where the water line (from the City) enters your home — an outdoor faucet coming up from the ground is common. Protecting these faucets from freezing is also easy and inexpensive.
- A Short-Term Solution is to wrap the faucet with a bathroom hand-towel (short faucet) OR bathroom bath-towel (tall faucet) — and cover the towel with a disposable, plastic bag you get from stores (short faucet) OR a kitchen trash-can bag (tall faucet). Use tape to secure the bag as close to the ground as possible. You must cover the towel. If it rains — a wet towel may freeze.
- A Long-Term Solution is to purchase a reusable, insulating cover designed for in-ground, outdoor faucets.

- There’s also a decorative solution that can further protect it from freezing (and hide it from view). Cover the faucet with a plastic landscaping rock (they’re hallow).
