What Are Nail Guards?

When Building Or Renovating, Building Code Requires Nail Guard Plates Be Installed Where Water Pipes Run Through Or Near Wall Studs.

Today’s International Plumbing Code States: “Protection against physical damage.  In concealed locations, where piping, other than cast-iron or galvanized steel, is installed through holes or notches in studs, joists, rafters or similar members less than 1-½ inches from the nearest edge of the member, the pipe shall be protected by steel shield plates.  Shield Plates shall have a thickness of not less than .575″ (a little over 1/2′).”

The purpose of nail guards is to stop anything from piercing the water pipe running through or near a wall stud.   This Building Code also applies to locations where electrical wiring is located.  Once covered, it’s quite difficult to determine where plumbing and electrical wiring is located.

The common drywall thickness for walls is 3/8″.  For ceilings drywall is typically 1/2″ thick as it must be able to support its own weight in a horizontal installation.

  • 3/8″ drywall is not thick enough to ensure even picture-hanger nails won’t go through it.
  • Home owners often seek wall studs to carry the weight of heavy items hung on walls.
  • It’s easy to see how water pipes can become pierced.

Can Water Pipes Be Located In Outside Walls In Texas?

Yes, You Can Encounter Water Pipes In Outside Walls In DFW.

Today’s International Plumbing Code States: “Water, Soil, & Waste Pipe shall not be installed outside of a building, in attics or crawl spaces, or concealed in walls or other places subject to freezing temperatures unless adequate provision is made to protect the pipes by freezing with insulation, heat or both.”   Many homes in North Texas may have water pipes on outside walls due to mild winter temperatures.

When A DFW Area Homes Is Built, Water  & Sewer Lines Are Put Into Place & Covered.  Then Cement Is Poured To Create A Concrete Foundation.

SHOWN:  These 2 photos show a home slab foundation under construction before and after cement was poured.

  • Water pipes (red & blue in photo on left) are run under the slab and rise upward where they will be connected to the kitchen, a bathroom, or laundry room.
  • The photo on the right shows water pipes coming up in what will be the outside walls (upper right corner of photo on right).

Does My Older DFW Home Have Nail Guards?

We were unable to located historical Building Code requirements for nail guards.  For your protection, assume they are not present in your older home.  Don’t Guess!  Piercing a water pipe can create tremendous water damage.  Guessing about the location of electrical wires can become deadly.

This Verbiage Is Displayed In The Amazon. com Listing: “The Bosch GMS120 Digital Wall Scanner features multi-mode laser detection for wood studs, metal objects (studs and steel/copper pipes) and live wiring.”

Most older homes have copper water pipes, so this device can determine locations for both (metal) water pipes and live electrical wires.  If you are unsure if your home has copper water pipes, you may be able to see the water pipe material after it passed through the wall (to the inside of home).  If not you may need to pull the escutcheon trim-ring away from the wall to see the water pipe material as it comes through the wall.

SHOWN:  This is one type of plumbing escutcheon.  They are often almost flat when installed around water pipes coming through the wall.
