Because most DFW homes’ ductwork in the attic — access to ductwork is typically easy.   Adding dampers may require new ductwork — ask your HVAC Contractor if their products work with your existing ductwork.

  • HVAC ductwork has a large Trunk Line.
  • Coming off the trunk line are smaller Branch Lines serving each room.
  • A Damper(s) are installed in a Trunk Line — to control several rooms (served by branch lines coming off that trunk line).
  • A Damper(s) is installed in a Branch Line — to control one room.
  • The existing (original) thermostat continues to control when, and how long, the Furnace & A/C will run.
  • The dampers work independently of the HVAC System.  Dampers open & close when their thermostat tells them to.
  • When some dampers are closed — the area where the existing (original) thermostat’ is located heats / cools faster.  This allows the Furnace or A/C to run less.
  • When those dampers are open — the area where the existing (original) thermostat is located heats / cools more slowly.  This requires the Furnace or A/C to run longer.

Zoned-Dampered HVAC is Particularly Valuable In 2-Story Homes.  Because the 2nd floor will always be warmer than the 1st floor (because heat rises).  Additionally, during DFW summer, the attic gets very hot (attic temps can reach 160+ degrees during DFW summer).  Some of the attic’s heat radiates downward into the rooms — making them notably warmer than the first-floor rooms (that have air-conditioned rooms above them).
